Social media platforms provide users with different ways to communicate, share content and build online communities. Although many platforms offer similar features, they differ in their audiences, purposes and approaches to content. The following comparison examines the key similarities and differences between Facebook and Instagram, TikTok and Snapchat, Flickr and DeviantArt and Vimeo and YouTube.

Facebook vs Instagram

Facebook and Instagram are two of the most popular social media platforms for digital marketers and internet users, with both platforms owned by Meta (Motoc, 2022). They share several similarities, including the ability to publish images and videos through feed posts, Stories, Reels and carousel posts. Both platforms also allow users to interact with content by liking and commenting on posts, tagging other accounts, adding locations and connecting with other users through follows or friend requests. In addition, both platforms provide shopping features that allow businesses to promote and sell products. Despite these similarities, there are several important differences. Facebook allows users to create text-only posts and photo albums, whereas Instagram is primarily focused on visual content and is more mobile-oriented. Facebook also provides greater flexibility for including clickable links within posts, while Instagram has traditionally restricted clickable links mainly to areas such as profiles and Stories. Facebook profiles can also contain more detailed information, while Instagram bios are limited to 150 characters (Motoc, 2022). Overall, Facebook is better suited to broader communication, community building and information sharing, while Instagram places greater emphasis on visual storytelling, mobile engagement and creative content.

TikTok vs Snapchat

TikTok and Snapchat are both popular social media platforms that focus on visual and engaging content, particularly among younger audiences. Both platforms allow users to create and share videos, use filters and effects, interact with other users and discover content. However, their main purposes and approaches to content are different. TikTok is primarily focused on short-form video content, with music, trends, challenges and creative editing playing an important role. Its algorithm recommends videos based on users’ interests, allowing content to reach people beyond the creator’s existing followers (Fisher, 2023). In comparison, Snapchat places greater emphasis on communication and connections between friends. Users can send photos, videos and text messages directly to others, while features such as Stories, Lenses, Memories, Snap Map and Discover provide additional ways to share and consume content (Fisher, 2023). Another key difference is the temporary nature of Snapchat content, with Snaps and Stories designed to disappear after a certain period, whereas TikTok videos generally remain available. Both platforms can be useful for digital marketing, but TikTok is particularly suited to creative, trend-based content and audience discovery, while Snapchat is more focused on personal communication, connections and short-term content.

Flickr vs DeviantArt

Flickr and DeviantArt are both online platforms that allow users to share visual creative work and connect with other members of creative communities. Both platforms can be used by photographers and artists to display their work, receive feedback and discover the work of other creators. However, the main difference between the platforms is their focus. Flickr is primarily centred on photography, making it suitable for photographers who want to upload, organise and share photographs. In comparison, DeviantArt has a broader focus on creative arts, including photography, drawing, painting, sculpture and literature (Wessel, 2011). The comparison by Organizing Creativity also suggests that DeviantArt has a stronger emphasis on artistic content and provides categories that make it easier for users to browse different types of creative work. Another difference is how users discover content. Flickr uses features such as “Interestingness” to highlight selected photographs, whereas DeviantArt provides categories and a “newest” section that can help recently uploaded work gain exposure (Wessel, 2011). Overall, while both platforms support creative communities and provide opportunities to showcase work, Flickr is more specifically suited to photography, whereas DeviantArt provides a broader environment for artists and creative professionals to share and promote different forms of artwork.

Vimeo vs YouTube

Vimeo and YouTube are both online video platforms that allow users to upload, host, share and embed video content for audiences worldwide. Both can be used by individual creators, businesses and organisations to distribute content and build an online presence. However, the platforms differ significantly in their main purpose and approach. YouTube is primarily designed for reach, audience discovery and virality, using its large search and recommendation system to help users discover content beyond the channels they already follow. It also offers a wide range of content, including tutorials, entertainment, music, podcasts and short-form videos through YouTube Shorts (Shelton, 2026). In comparison, Vimeo focuses more strongly on professional video hosting, quality, privacy and control. It is particularly suited to filmmakers, marketers and businesses that want greater control over how their videos are presented and who can access them. Vimeo also provides privacy settings, including password protection and restrictions on where videos can be embedded, as well as player customisation and branding options (Shelton, 2026). Overall, both platforms provide valuable video-sharing services, but YouTube is better suited to reaching large audiences and increasing discoverability, while Vimeo is more appropriate for professional, private and brand-controlled video content.
